Revamping General Education: Writing for Engineering with Mr. B

JoJoThe rationale colleges give for requiring general education courses is that students need to be “well rounded”. However, their students are already “well rounded” because they have been taught about a variety of subjects since elementary school. I went into college expecting tedious and pointless English classes that only served to give me general education credits. My circumstances made it difficult to make my schedule, so I had to take two FIQWS classes in place of Freshman Composition. I was able to choose from a list of topics for the classes, so I chose individual and society as I was taking sociology too. These classes reminded me of why English used to be my favorite subject in elementary school. I didn’t know what to expect for this class, but it made for a good follow-up.

JoJoFinding a job posting that I both liked and qualified for took a while. My criteria being an entry-level internship for electrical engineers narrowed my options by a good amount. I did learn how to make a resume in high school, but the guidelines stated in class enhanced it. I had to filter out anything on it that was irrelevant to the job. In one of my FIQWS classes last semester, my professor went over how to write a cover letter. I didn’t have much familiarity with one before that. The key course objective involved was knowing my audience: the recruiters at identifeye HEALTH and knowing my purpose: to show them why I should be offered an electrical engineering internship.

JoJoLab reports are a vital form of writing for not only the science classes I must take, but as a scientist myself. Any good lab report needs credible sources, so I certainly used my information literacy to determine which of the CCNY’s sources on its online library could support my claims.

JoJo The proposal project couldn’t have been completed without collaboration. Drafting and use of technology (Canva) were also essential.

JoJoI chose electromagnetic induction as my topic for my technical description because I wanted to gain a better understanding of the topic myself. In twelfth grade, my pre-engineering teacher introduced it by giving us labs to do on electromagnets. This assignment definitely involved synthesis, reading, and citation

yesn’tThis class taught me a good amount of things.
